Indian conglomerate Tata took another step towards establishing itself as a major player in the country’s aerospace industry after signing an agreement with Sikorsky to manufacture S-92 helicopter cabins.

The agreement between Tata Group subsidiary Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and Sikorsky, a United Technologies Corporation subsidiary, envisages delivery of the first cabin by late 2010 for the four-bladed, twin-engine helicopter, meant for both military and civilian markets.

The cabins would roll out from a new greenfield facility to be constructed at Hyderabad by TASL, a company for providing integrated solutions to aerospace, defence, homeland security and disaster management. The facility will be located at a special economic zone dedicated to the aerospace industry.

“India’s aerospace market is poised for significant growth and we are thrilled to have the opportunities to support that growth and to tap into the capabilities of India’s highly skilled aerospace workforce,” Sikorsky President Jeffrey P Pino told reporters here.

Ratan N Tata, Tata Sons Chairman, said his company believes that the production of S-92 cabins in India is a significant first step in the growth of India as a global hub for aerospace manufacturing.

“The contract represents a significant step forward in Tata Advanced Systems’ plans to establish a meaningful presence in the manufacture of aerostructures,” says Davinder Kumar, chief executive of Tata Advanced Systems. “We believe the combination of Tata’s manufacturing capabilities and skill sets, and India’s productivity benefits can deliver tremendous efficiencies for aerospace OEMs.”

S-92 is available in its military avatar as H-92 Super Hawk and is capable of carrying 22 troops. It is also available in a Search and Rescue and executive transport configuration, and also in maritime shipboard helicopter design CH-148 Cyclone.

Certified by both US Federal Aviation Administration and European Aviation Safety Agency, S-92 is also operated for travel by several Heads of State in its VIP transport configuration.

Sikorsky says that the S-92 helicopter is the first helicopter in its class to be certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration. It also is certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency. Close to 100 S-92s have been produced to date, and are operating worldwide in search and rescue, VIP transport and offshore transport roles.
