Recession Effects: Interns In Demand

In today’s recession-struck market, where companies are struggling to stay afloat, it’s interns who are considered hot property. Both MNCs and smaller firms find it more profitable to rope in eager interns, instead of paying fancy pay cheques to experienced employees.
Apart from willing to work for next-to-nothing stipends, or in some cases, even for free, these youngsters are motivated, can be moulded to fit into any role. What’s more, they are enthusiastic to take up any amount of work in the hope of gaining experience.
K. Rajshekar, CEO, Media Minds, an event management company, swears by the dedication and efficiency of interns. “Since they are keen to prove themselves, work gets done faster and they go all out to convince clients too.”
The money may not be good, but luckily for students, there’s more to internships now than just running errands for the big bosses.
Mrigesh Gaurav, an assistant manager with Maytas, says, “We encourage our interns to take up projects. They may be just out of college, but with a little bit of training, they are good to go. no stipend is paid for the period they work with us, but we give them ample work so that they get good exposure.”
And the interns aren’t complaining. Work experience worth talking about and their employer’s review letters are all they need.
“Who cares about the money, as long as they let us do some real work? I’m with an events company now and they let me be an active part of all their major events. I get to do everything from organising to console work and coordination with artistes. I’m willing to take on all the work they want me to do. If I manage to impress them, I might even be retained full time,” says Shafeeq Ahmed, an intern with an events management company.
V. Suma Pratyusha, a communications professional, looks at internships as stepping stones to the big, bad corporate world. “Internships help you warm up to the real world out there.
And I look at them as good options especially with the slowdown in the market.
My stint with an online portal helped me understanding the system, and other aspects of work, like operations, human resource and project implementation, deadlines etc. And by the time I got into a real job, I was already ready to fit in,” she says.
