Sanjeeviah Park To Get A ‘Make Over’

The Sanjeeviah Park will soon go for a makeover. Spread over 85 acres in the heart of the city and a major lung space, it has ended up as a lovers’ den for young couples. Of the 1,500 people who visit the park each day almost 1,400 are lovebirds.
Fed up with the image that they did not intend to be associated with, the officials responsible for the upkeep of the park have suddenly gone into an overdrive and want to change it into a destination for family and children.
“We want to refurbish the total area of the park and make additional arrangements specially for children,” said one official.
But as a first step, they want to dissuade the young couples who have made it their day-long destination as the park closes at 5 pm. Towards that end, the authorities have already initiated a few steps like alerting the guards by asking them to keep watch on the couples and if any one of them is found in indecent way, ask them to leave. And to prevent the couples from getting cosy, the bushes where visibility is minimal for anyone to oversee are being removed, the official said.
To convert the park into a family destination, the park officials are planning a children’s park. A park for children where they get training in simple traffic rules was disbanded long ago. “Change of governments is a major culprit as far as developmental activities are concerned. Lack of funds gave us no choice but to close down the children’s park a few years ago. In fact, that led to the park becoming a haunt only for young couples,” the official said.
With a budget of Rs 4 crore, the park officials want to add swings, slides and other equipment for the kids.
“Not only that, we want to install flood lights and allow families and children even to spend late hours,” he added. Food courts and proper restroom facilities are some of the other plans on the anvil.
An architect from Mumbai has been given the job of changing the profile of Sanjeeviah park.
The park officials hope that in a few months, it would be a family destination like the Buddha Purnima Park, and not just a dark place for lovers to exchange sweet nothings and maybe get physical.
