The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the first Greenfield airport located at Shamshabad on the city outskirts, has reached another crucial milestone by becoming the country’s first Code F compliant airport following the successful landing of super jumbo A-380 on Friday morning.
The Code F of the International Civil Aviation Corporation specifies the requirements of an airport in terms of facilities like runways, taxiways, boarding bridges and stands, rescue and fire-fighting service for landing and take-off of the largest passenger aircraft like the A-380. The `giant bird’ that left the Begumpet airport at 6 am landed at the international airport, promoted by the GMR Group (GHIAL), at 6.30 after performing a low fly-pass.
The mammoth aircraft that was received with a water cannon salute by the state-of-art fire-fighting Panthers docked successfully.
The “greener, cleaner, quieter, smarter” gentle giant, as it is described, enthused visitors throughout the day on Thursday at the India Aviation 2008.
Captain Jean-Michel Roy, the test pilot who captained the super jumbo from Toulouse to Hyderabad, described the layout, emergency system and other facilities at the airport as “truly international class”. The modular system designed at the airport was sure to convert it as a hub in this part of the region and would attract non-stop flights from the United States.
GHIAL chief executive officer P.S. Nair described the event as a momentous occasion for the airport and it became the first Code F compliant airport in the country where a fully loaded A-380 could land. “As the global airlines induct this aircraft into their fleet, the airport will be connected with A-380 flights to various destinations,” GHIAL chief commercial officer Viswanath Attaluri said.
Airbus executive vice-president Kiran Rao said the company had showcased the easy integration of the aircraft into the existing airport facilities and “we have the most modern airliner in the most modern airport.”
