Secunderabad Railway Station To Be Expanded Vertically

Loading ...Secunderabad railway station could shortly witness a vertical expansion. That could mean that the trains would arrive and depart from different floors, while other floors could accommodate malls, restaurants and other passenger facilities like booking offices, waiting halls connected to other floors by escalators.
The vertical expansion would enable the railways to take maximum utility out of the built up area and also transform it into a world-class station, Railway Board Chairman K.C. Jena said here on Tuesday. In an informal chat after inspecting Secunderabad station, Mr. Jena said the terminus was one among the 26 stations across the country to be developed into world-class railway stations under Public-Private-Partnership basis.
The railways would be at an advantage, as it would not invest any money for the development as the successful bidder for the PPP project would pay for utilising the premises.
“It is a big project worth nearly Rs.6,000 crore and is still at a conceptual stage. We are hiring consultants to finalise the global tendering process. This process should be completed in the next six months,” Mr. Jena said. On the fire safety measures in the backdrop of the ghastly Gautami Express incident, he said several precautionary measures were being introduced. The Railways were also using fire retarding material in making seats, cushions, curtains and floor mats.
On the proposed construction of a terminus in the city, Mr. Jena said the State Government was requested to allot land. “We are identifying lands at different locations. As and when the Government allocates land, we will take up construction,” he said. On the MMTS second phase, he said a detailed evaluation of first phase would be made shortly. He travelled in an MMTS train along with SCR GM H.K. Padhee on Tuesday. Impressed by SCR performance, he announced a reward of Rs. 1 lakh. Earlier, he inaugurated a Rs. 17.35-crore multipurpose indoor stadium at the Railways sports complex grounds.
