All major infrastructure projects and works in the city like developing new link roads, construction of flyovers , new railway lines, feeder buses and construction of new bus terminals will be decided by Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) for Hyderabad metropolitan region.
The panel will not only make policies on transportation and traffic issues in the city but coordinate between various government arms.
The unified authority has been created on the recommendations of the Hyderabad Area Transportation Study (HAT Study of 1988). Ironically , it took the state government 20 years to constitute UMTA.
As of now, several departments execute projects and works relating to transportation and traffic in the city. But there is no coordination among them. For instance, there is no coordination among APSRTC, South Central Railway (SCR) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on the issue of Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS). The issue was solved by the chief secretary last year.
Now, the UMTA has been given powers to direct different agencies involved in implementation of traffic and transportation policies. Any new projects or ongoing projects pertaining to traffic and transportation would be placed before the committee for clearance.
The committee would also prepare action plans for traffic and transportation in the Hyderabad metropolitan area.
The HMDA would prepare a database on traffic and transportation like traffic studies which would be useful for making policies and taking any steps to decongest the city.
“The Unified Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the metropolitan region was incorporated in the HMDA Act. This authority is to bring all agencies under one umbrella in solving traffic and transportation-related problems ,” said an official of municipal administration and urban development department (MA&UD ).
