Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has instructed officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other departments concerned to speed up works on road connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

Dr. Reddy expressed dissatisfaction that work was progressing at a snail’s pace in spite of the fact that the airport became operational five months ago.

The much-delayed road connectivity works would not be completed unless a “special drive with missionary zeal” was launched.

The Chief Minister, who reviewed the progress of works with senior officials on Monday, warned officials against giving excuses like hindrances posed by places of worship in completing the work.

Officials should not slow down or stop work because of small places of worship and they should concentrate on completing the remaining works while steps should be taken to get consent of people and organisations concerned as connectivity to the international airport was important.

He said the P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway would be renamed as PV Expressway while the Outer Ring Road would be named after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

He wanted officials to ensure completion of the first phase of the ORR project by November 14, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, under any circumstances.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that road-widening work on the Sangeet Theatre - Tarnaka Junction stretch was stopped after railways approached the court as a major portion of the land was in their area. Further, encroachments on the road by temples and mosque should be removed for completing work on Mehdipatnam - Aramgarh stretch.

Though work on the main carriage way between Uppal and Owaisi hospital was completed, temples and mosques stood as obstacles in the work on service roads.

The same was the case with the stretch between Chandrayangutta and Aramgarh where land acquisition was a problem. Work was progressing at a brisk pace on the stretch between Aramgarh and Chandrayangutta and Tarnaka Junction and Uppal, they said.
