In what can be music to the ears of air travellers going to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, the Trumpet Interchange constructed near Shamshabad will be thrown open to the public from September 15 without a formal inauguration.
As a result, people proceeding towards the airport can avoid the National Highway at Shamshabad that is notorious for traffic jams and reach the airport in just 30 minutes.
Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority Commissioner K S Jawahar Reddy told to this website’s newspaper that the road to the international airport joined the National Highway 7 at Shamshabad, becoming a major junction. To remove the conflicts of traffic movement to the airport and avoid the creation of a new junction on the National Highway, it was proposed to have an interchange at the place. As it was a T-shaped junction, a trumpetshaped interchange was designed.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) gave permission for the construction of this interchange on June 26, 2007. The work was grounded in August 2007 and completed in a record duration of one year.
According to Jawahar Reddy, the Trumpet Interchange, built at a cost of Rs 20 crore, will prevent conflicting movement of traffic. The interchange will ensure that the flow of traffic to and from the airport on NH-7 gets converted to free left turn flow.
The Trumpet Interchange resembles a trumpet, a musical instrument, and was constructed as part of the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway at Chainage 18.8 km on the NH-7. It consists of a bridge portion and four loops A, B, C and D. The main carriageway is 670 metres long while the length of the via-duct (bridge) is 115 metres.
The 480 metre-long Loop A on the airport to Bangalore route will serve the traffic coming from the airport and going towards Bangalore (without using the bridge).
The 570 metre-long Loop B will facilitate free left turn from NH-7 to the airport. It will serve the traffic coming from Hyderabad (without using the bridge). The 673 metre-long Loop C will serve the traffic coming from the direction of Bangalore and going to the airport (using the bridge).
The 607 metre-long Loop D will serve the traffic coming from the airport and proceeding towards Hyderabad (using the bridge).
