From Marredpally to Madhapur or Gopalpuram to Gachibowli, how much time does one spend to reach the workplace and return to the comforts of home? The recent times have not only changed the outlines of the city but even redefined commuting to work, for most.

Gone are the days when work hours were clearly structured in day time and one would shuttle on a fixed routine within the city itself. These days, some workforce or other is on the roads trying to reach their offices or return home at any given hour. So much of precious time is lost in the process.

It is against this backdrop, that the concept of ‘Walk-to-Work’ is catching up with most of the IT and ITES facilities that are coming up on what once used to be the suburbs.

It’s a concept that offers the comfort of walking to work in minutes and avoid the rigours of wending through the maze of traffic. Just stroll down to your work, that’s it.

Western trend

Most of the IT and ITES Special Economic Zones are coming up with the concept and the trend which has been popular in the west for some time, is seen as an appealing option for those vexed with having to sweat it out for hours, twice a day, on roads braving all weather conditions.

Apart from converting the commuting time from hours to minutes, the idea is also seen as one that will help better utilisation of the efficiency and energies of the workforce.

The Maytas Properties which is coming up with three IT/ITES SEZ at Bachupally, Mysammaguda and Gopanapally with a total extent of 148 acres has the walk-to-work environment incorporated.

Apart from creating modern workspaces suited for global work styles, it has the SEZs incorporated into the townships where offices are within walking proximity. The residential estates are just nearby and all one has to do is start a few minutes before the reporting time and reach at a leisurely and relaxed pace.

Quality lifestyle

The residential spaces that are fast lapped up by the software professionals are not only most modern by way of looks, fitted with all luxurious amenities, but have all other essentials of day-to-day life in the vicinity.

Want to shop? There is a mall. Education of children taken care of at schools across the street, medicare facility available nearby and a host of recreation facilities on the cards.

Maytas describes it as a seamless integration of home, play and work.

“The project envisages a superior quality lifestyle for the inhabitants within a quick jaunt to their work places,” it says.

Lanco Hills at Manikonda is another major project that is spread over 100 acres and is shaping with best of SEZ/non-SEZ and residential spaces.

Those behind the project describe it as one that will be ranked among the best townships in the world with 15 residential towers, 11 SEZ/non-SEZ IT spaces, club house, multiplex, mall, five-star and business class hotels and service apartments. A whole new concept of urban living and working with walk-to-work culture being truly at play here, is what the developers say.

Aliens Infrastructure is coming up with Aliens Space Station.1 near the financial district with the 30-floor project offering 2,205 units, while Ramky Infra has Ramky Towers at Gachibowli.
