The land acquisi tion process for IIT-Medak in Kandi village has finally gained momentum with the state government deciding to offer compensation to the affected people on par with the package offered to people who lost land due to the Outer Ring Road project.
Though the Union ministry of human resource development decided to set up a permanent IIT campus in Kandi village about 18 months ago, the state government failed to acquire the required 537 acres because of compensation package hurdles.
While 453 acres belongs to state government, 84 acres have to be acquired from individuals. The state government has sanctioned Rs 19 crore for the purpose.
Following reports that the HRD ministry was irked because of the inordinate delay in the acquisition process, the state government has asked the Medak collector, Mr Piyush Kumar, to complete the process immediately.
The Union ministry had also made it clear that there should be no litigation in future over the ownership of land at Kandi.
The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, held a high-level review meeting on Tuesday on the land acquisition process and directed the officials to expedite it.
While the state government had initially offered Rs 2 lakh per acre to the affected people, some farmers demanded Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh and a house site.
The government has now raised the amount to Rs 3 lakh and a 200 square yard house site.
“The major chunk of the land belongs to the state government,” Mr K. Prabhakar Reddy, the special chief secretary to the Chief Minister said.
“Only 84 acres have to be acquired through private individuals which got delayed as some of them demanded more than the agreed amount,” he explained.
Mr Reddy said the process would now be completed in a week’s time. “We are ready to handover the entire land to IIT-Medak this week as there is no dispute on the compensation we are offering,” he added.
