Two days after incessant rain lashed the city, dusty and pothole-riddled roads made life miserable for hordes of motorists on Monday. Vehicles crawled on almost all the roads with 10-inch deep potholes in some areas and scattered gravel in other localities posing serious threat to commuters, especially motorcyclists.

The situation is even worse at the busy stretches at Lakdi-ka-pul, Anand theatre in Rasoolpura, Ameerpet, Somajiguda, Himayathnagar, Rethibowli and Mettuguda. What should have been a 15-minute drive from Khairatabad to Punjagutta, took more than 40 minutes for road-users to ply across the stretch. “It’s a hell to travel on these roads. Civic officials should have taken up precautionary measures to address the problem”, said A. Krishna, a businessman and resident of East Marredpally.

While commuters had a tough time in circumventing potholes on several roads, those on well-maintained stretches were covered with a thick layer of flying dust. Adding to it, the overflowing drainage water at Srinagar Colony, Punjagutta Circle and other areas made it difficult for pedestrians in walking across the stretch.“We are forced to block our nose with handkerchiefs owing to stench emanating from overflowing drains”, said K. Raju, a civil contractor.Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) V. S. K. Kaumudi maintained efforts were on to improve road conditions.

The water-logging problem at Model House in Punjagutta was solved to ease traffic congestion.

Steps were also taken in coordination with municipal officials to repair potholes on a war footing, he added.

Traffic police on Monday suggested alternate routes to air travellers for going to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad on time. There is obstruction to free flow of traffic following construction of P. V. Narasimha Rao expressway from Mehdipatnam – Rethibowli - Attapur bridge. The three alternate routessuggested for the airport include DMRL, Chandrayangutta crossroads, MBNR flyover, Bandlaguda, Katedan, Aramghar and Shamshabad airport; Madina crossroads, City College, Bahadurpura, Zoo Park, Tadban, Shastripuram, Aramghar and Shamshabad airport; and Tarnaka, Hubsiguda, Uppal crossroads, L. B. Nagar crossroads, Karmanghat, DMRL and Shamshabad airport.
