Golconda
MONUMENTAL WONDER: Minja Yang, director, Unesco, visited the Golconda fort on Friday to study and suggest ways so the fort would be eligible to get declared as a world heritage site

It will not be a cakewalk for getting a world heritage status for the Golconda Fort.

“It is a complicated procedure and will take at least six years,” said Unesco director Minja Yang, who visited the Golconda Fort and the Qutub Shahi tombs on Friday.

Yang said only if the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI), which maintains the fort, and the state government’s department of archaelogy, which maintains the tombs, work together to put a proper documentation, would it be possible to get the world heritage tag.

“The procedure is complicated. The inter-governmental committee comprising members from 21 different countries takes the final decision in declaring a site as world heritage monument. It depends on how the state government and central government make a case for it by ensuring that all documentation is done properly,” the Unesco official said.

It may be mentioned here that the Golconda Fort, though being on the WHS tentative list for 10 years has not got the desired status because of encroachments within the 100-metre buffer zone.

“Though the Qutub Shahi tombs are great architectural monuments, they have to be clubbed with the Golconda as it represents the place where the city existed previously. They have to be presented together meaningfully to be considered for a world heritage tag,” Yang said. “I see a lot of reconstruction being done at different parts of Golconda. So it is important to know when these reconstructions had been done. The department has to publish all these details,” Jang said.

Director of Archaeology and Museums, P Chenna Reddy said under the central financial assistance Rs 6 crore had been allocated for restoration of Qutub Shahi tombs. He said Rs 4 crore had already been released. Superintending archaeologist, ASI, D Jitendra Das along with Anuradha Reddy, member of the core committee of Intach, accompanied Jang.
