The Buddha Purnima Project Authority is literally wasting Rs 25 lakh to beautify pavements on the lakeside of NTR Marg road. It had spent the same amount on repair and beautification of the same pavements in the last few years.

The authority is also spending another Rs 30 lakh on beautification of central medians.

Such erratic ventures are not the preoccupation of the BPPA alone.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities are also spending crores of rupees to beautify central medians on various roads in city.

Interestingly, BPPA officials told this correspondent the footpath was being refurbished from the “security point of view”.

“The cement pavements are broken and we are replacing them with stone blocks so that loose stones are not available for miscreants to pelt in case of any untoward incident,” said a senior official.

When contacted, the BPPA director, Mr Chandra Mohan Reddy, said the beautification of the pavement had been going on for over a year now.

“Since it a route with heavy traffic, such works are being taken up in small stretches,” he said. “The pavement stones are being replaced after a gap of five to six years,” Mr Chandra Mohan Reddy added.

However, enquiries by this correspondent revealed that the same pavement was “redone” more than thrice in the last couple of years. But BPPA officials claimed that they were only repair works.
