As work on the proposed bus terminal at the old Gandhi Hospital will start from August, traffic leading towards the Secunderabad Railway Station will be diverted soon.

Huda has proposed to construct a bus terminal on the nine-acre old Gandhi Hospital premises with a minimum of 3.0 million sq ft covered parking area to accommodate a minimum of 1,200 cars and 4,000 two-wheelers. The upcoming terminus, which is in the vicinity of the railway station, will be linked through a foot-over-bridge (FOB) on platform 1 to the bus terminus.

“In this connection, a study on the traffic impact assessment at Secunderabad Railway Station will be taken by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda) with a developer. Four developers - DLF, Simplex, Nagarujuna Constructions and Era Infrastructure, New Delhi - have been short-listed and one among them will be finalised in the next three weeks,” Huda chief engineer Vivek Deshmukh told TOI.

“The selected developer will take up the study on traffic planning, management and traffic assessment at the railway station and surrounding areas,” he said.

“Once the work commences on the project, it will be very difficult to transport loads of material like iron, stone and wood to this bus terminal via the railway station road in the prevailing traffic situation. So, the study will be conducted,” he replied to a query.

“Huda will also take the city traffic police’s help to divert traffic that leads to the railway station,” Deshmukh said.

According to Jawahrlal Nehru Technological University’s co-ordinator of centre for transportation engineering Dr K M Lakshman Rao,”the pedestrian density is nearly of one lakh on any given day in a space of less than two to three sq km area. All vehicles including two, three and four wheelers are also intersecting within an area of two to three sq km at few junctions carrying more than four to five lakh vehicles per day.”

It is estimated that nearly 2.5 lakh passengers per day are either coming to or going out of the Secunderabad railway station from various places.

High density of population and vehicular traffic use 10 gateways including the Sangeet theatre junction, Oliphant Bridge, Chilkalguda, Paradise, Telephone Exchange, Clock Tower, CTO, Bowenpally, Monda Market and Boat Club, he said.
