The Institute offers B.Tech programme in aircraft maintenance engineering and diploma in aeronautical engineering from July this year.
“We have the necessary approval for conducting the programmes from the Director General of Civil Aviation and recognition from the Government of Andhra Pradesh,” Mr G. Satyanarayna, Director, IIASTM, said.
The three-year (six semesters) programmes would have a fee structure of Rs 25,000 and Rs 11,000 per semester. The institute had acquired one Cessna 172 N aircraft from the US for giving practical training to students.
“By September, we are planning to acquire one more Cessna and a 54-seat heavy aircraft from US to provide complete practical training to the students,” he said.
Over 2.8 crore was invested in setting up of the institute and another 2 crore would be invested in about a year, he added.
IIASTM also has plans to offer post graduation in aviation management, diploma in aviation disaster management and aviation medicine.
On the job opportunities for the courses, Mr Satyanarayana said there was huge gap between demand and supply of talent in the aviation sector. “According to industry estimates, aviation sector in the country will need over one lakh people as aircraft maintenance engineers, and pilots, among others, he said.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Vasan said upgrading the infrastructure and training personnel in the aviation sector assumed critical importance. The sector witnessed a 20 per cent growth during the last five years. The projected 11th Plan outlay for the sector was Rs. 43,560 crore, apart from private sector investment of Rs. 93,493 crore.
The Minister stated that the Centre proposed to spend Rs. 24,300 crore for modernising airports in the current plan, in tune with the 2020 vision, to build 500 world-class airports.
Mr. Vasan said the Centre had so far provided Rs. 28,581 crore for 75 on-going projects in Andhra Pradesh. They were taken up in ten key infrastructure areas, including civil aviation, coal, steel, power roads, telecom and urban development.
Earlier, he inspected Cessna 172 N aircraft, which has been purchased from the New York Police by the institute for training students. Former director of Advanced Systems Laboratory and a member of IIASTM board of directors R.N. Agarwal said there was an acute shortage of experts in the aviation sector. He urged the institute to start new courses.
