Infosys To Begin SEZ Works By September

Infosys Technologies expects to start construction work on its two special economic zones (SEZs) in Hyderabad before this September. The IT major was allotted about 440 acres at Pocharam on the outskirts during mid-2007 for setting up of two campuses.
The company subsequently applied for grant of special economic zone (SEZ) status for both the campuses. Though the campuses were given the SEZ status in August last year, nothing moved after that.
“We will start (construction work) in a couple of months,” S Gopalakrishnan, chief executive officer and managing director of Infosys Technologies Ltd, said.
Actual operations in the facilities are likely to begin in the last quarter of 2009, as the construction of phase I could take about an year. Once completed, the new facilities could accommodate about 90,000 professionals.
He said the SEZs would be developed as centres of excellence and the infrastructure would be based on learnings from its existing campuses. He spoke on the sidelines of HR Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at Hyderabad. Infosys already has a campus at Gachibowli near Hitec City spread in about 50 acres with a capacity to house about 10,000 professionals.
At a time when the state government is finding it difficult to provide land for the IT companies willing to set up their centres in Hyderabad, the delay from the IT major in taking the project forward has been worrying the officials. Gopalakrishnan, however, said the project was on course and that he is not unduly worried about the delay.
Hyderabad is one of the company’s larger locations and would continue to be so, according to him. He said the SEZs would be developed in phases, with facilities built for 5000-1000 people at a time.
