GHMC Starts Demolition Act

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has ordered demolition of apartments that were constructed after the announcement of the Building Penalisation Scheme (BPS).
Senior officials of the GHMC on Monday, asked deputy commissioners of all the circles to verify the buildings under construction in their respective areas and submit details to the head office immediately.
Several builders had constructed additional floors in the last three months hoping that they too would be regularised under the BPS.
Some of the builders who are hand in glove with the GHMC staff, had submitted applications under the BPS claiming that the structures were constructed two years ago. Officials, however, said it is the responsibility of the builder to prove that the structures were constructed before the announcement of BPS.
“We are not going to regularise such unauthorised constructions. We will demolish them as soon as we get authentic information from all the 18 circles,” the GHMC additional com missioner (planning and projects), Mr K. Dhanunjaya Reddy, said.
The state has already made it clear that the BPS scheme is applicable to the buildings which were constructed before December 2007. Meanwhile, officials indicated that the scheme will not be extended further.
GHMC has already received 1.06 lakh applications and 30,000 more applications are likely to be submitted by end of this month.
In fact, officials expected 50,000 applications when the scheme was announced six months ago. However, the figure has already crossed a lakh and had brought around Rs 300 crore to the civic body’s exchequer.
The revenue is likely to go up by June 30, which is the last date for submission of applications under the scheme.
