Realtor, Netas Out To Usurp Lake At Nanakramguda

Slowly and silently, a powerful realtors’ lobby backed by politicians and aided by conniving elements in Huda and revenue departments are encroaching on a lake on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Among the 87 lakes on the outskirts of the city, Thoulonikunta lake is situated between the villages of Khajaguda village and Nanakramguda in Ranga Reddy district. Thanks to more than cooperative officials, one realtor with powerful political backing is currently laying an 80-feet road right through the lake leading to his housing venture nearby. The venture has access from the main road, but the intention of laying a road splitting through the lake is to eventually fill it up and encroach with the subsidiary aim of raising another venture on the lake.

The modus operandi in this instance was as follows: The planning section of Huda first sought permission in October last year from the revenue department for alienation of 1.07 acre of land in Survey No 17 of Khajaguda village to lay an 80 feet master plan road. In the sketch that the Huda officials presented to the revenue department, it was not disclosed that the land being sought directly cuts through Thoulonikunta lake. Initially, the revenue officials too did not physically inspect the land in question and handed it over to Huda pending the alienation order from the state government. Huda, in turn, handed over the land to the realtor who is currently building the road cutting across the lake. When the fact that a road is being planned through the lake came to the attention of the district authorities, the joint collector directed Huda to alter the alignment of the road. Thus on paper, the road is shown as skirting the lake and leading to the housing venture, but in reality, the road is slicing through the lake.

In an irony of sorts, the fraud was detected by G S Jayachandra, executive engineer of Huda’s lakes division. He filed a complaint with the Raidurg police station on June 4 following which the police stopped the construction activity on the lake and seized four tippers carrying road laying material.

However, the realtor immediately pulled political strings. The political bosses are said to have questioned Huda as to how can one of its wings stop the work when another wing has already accorded permission. Following pressure, Huda vice-chairman K S Jawahar Reddy held a meeting of senior officials last Friday where it was reportedly decided that the complaint filed by Jayachandra against the coming up of the road on the lake would be withdrawn. According to sources, the vice-chairman of the Huda is hesitating to instruct the EE to withdraw the complaint.

Jawahar Reddy could not be reached on Tuesday despite several attempts by TOI. But a representative of the realtor, V Sudhakar, whose name figures in the FIR, said they have not violated any law in laying the road. “Huda vice-chairman permitted us to lay a 24 metre road in Survey No 17 in Khajaguda village on March 23, 2008. We have deposited Rs 4 lakh for the purpose,” said the representative.
