A part of the Hussainsagar lake near the Khairatabad flyover is being converted into a park. This part of the lake is the storehouse of surplus water of the Hussainsagar. And, this is being done by none other than the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda), the supposed protector of the water body.

Even as vanishing lakes on the outskirts of the city are raising grave concerns, the lake near the Khairatabad flyover, which is practically part of the Hussainsagar, is being filled up to develop a park by BPPA, a wing of the Huda. The work on this is going apace with dry lake bed being filled up with mud.

The BPPA has taken up levelling works on the 15-acre lake.

“To protect the water body from land sharks, Huda has decided to develop a mini park. We will use the silt for strengthening bunds. Later, other facilities like cascade fountains and walkways will be constructed. For this, the BPPA will spend Rs 45 lakh,” BPPA officer-onspecial duty N Chandramohan Reddy told ‘TOI.’

Colour lights, lush greenery and beautiful flower beds, manicured lawns and children’s park would also be added to the park. BPPA officials express the hope that it would reduce pollution in the area surrounding areas of the lake.

However, Forum For A Better Hyderabad members scorned at the plan. “The BPPA authorities should not convert it into a park. Instead, they should take steps to restore the lake. How can BPPA take a decision when the issue is before court?” forum Hyderabad president M Veda Kumar said.

“The Huda has to protect surrounding areas of Hussainsagar, which is the oldest lake in the city and not damage it. The forum will demand an end to the ongoing works at the proposed park,” he added.

Huda vice-chairman K S Jawahar Reddy was not available for comment.
