GHMC Issues Notices On BPS

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started serving fresh notices asking owners of non-residential buildings in the twin cities to get their unauthorised constructions regulated under the Building Penalisation Scheme (BPS).
The GHMC had served over 50,000 notices when the BPS was launched in January. But the response was poor with the owners not coming forward. The total number of applications filed was just a few hundred. This prompted the GHMC to extend the deadline at least four times.
“We have issued notices to another 20,000 commercial building owners and directed them to file the BPS applications before the scheme ends on June 30,” The additional commissioner of GHMC, Mr Dhananjaya Reddy, said.
With the fresh set of notices, the GHMC has served over 70,000 notices.
Given the huge number of illegal non-residential buildings, the income is expected to be over Rs 400 crore, GHMC sources said.
They warned that legal action would be initiated against those who failed to avail the BPS after the deadline expires. This would mean demolition of a large number of structures, sources added.
