There used to be a misconception that Avocado is bad for us because they’re high in fat. In fact, avocados are loaded with a variety of antioxidants, including familiar disease-fighting compounds such as lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin E. Avocados help the body absorb phytochemicals from other foods. The fat in these avocados, mostly the monounsaturated kind, is extremely good for the heart, and for health in general.
Researchers continue to uncover disease-fighting chemicals or new health roles for Avocados. No matter how we slice it, the avocado has plenty of health benefits.
An experiment done on 45 people who ate avocados every day for a week experienced and average 17% drop in total blood cholesterol. Their cholesterol ratio also changed in a healthy way: Level of LDL (low-density lipoprotein or sometimes called “bad cholesterol”) and triglycerides, both associated with heart disease, went down while HDL (High-density lipoprotein or “good fat”) levels, which tend to lower the risk of heart disease, rise.
Facts on Avocado Health Benefits:
-
Avocados provide more than 25 essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. Avocado is regarded as a complete food for an individual, mainly owing to its high nutritional value.
-
Monounsaturated fat: Avocados are high in fat — one reason they’ve earned the nickname “butter pear”. Most of the fat in an avocado is monounsaturated — the “good” fat raises levels of good HDL-cholesterol and lowers harmful triglycerides without raising harmful LDL cholesterol levels.
-
Avocados are rich in beta-sitosterol, a natural substance shown to significantly lower blood cholesterol levels.
-
U.S. government recently revised its official nutrition guidelines to urge Americans to eat more avocados
-
Minerals: Avocados are a good source of potassium (they are higher in potassium than a medium banana), a mineral that helps regulate blood pressure. Adequate intake of potassium can help to guard against circulatory diseases, like high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke. Avocados also provide a fair amount of magnesium, which your body needs to metabolize carbohydrates and fats.
-
Nutrients: Creamy rich avocado is considered the world’s healthiest fruit, because of its nutrient contents such as vitamin K, dietary fiber, potassium, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin C, copper, and reasonable calories in it
-
One avocado a day may save your life from cardiomyopathy and heart failure
-
Healthy Eyes: Avocado is a very concentrated dietary source of the carotenoid lutein. it also contains measurable amounts of related carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene) plus significant quantities of tocopherols (vitamin E). Avocados can help maintain healthy eyes as they contain 81 micrograms of carotenoid luteins.
-
Healthy Skin: Another great health benefit of the avocado is that they are rich in antioxidants and are great for skin disorders, when used as a paste and applied to rough skin it will make it smoother. Avocado oil is added in a variety of cosmetics due to its ability to nourish the skin with essential vitamins and make it glow. It also helps in treating psoriasis.
-
Its high fat content gives a quicker feeling of satiation (”fullness”), thus helping to reduce over-eating
-
Fiber: Avocados are high in fiber, particularly soluble fiber, which promotes regularity, helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, and lowers blood cholesterol levels.
