“When you live for a strong purpose, then hard work isn’t an option. It’s a necessity” - Steve Pavlina. Adapa Karthik has proved it through his achievement. His achievement speaks loud about his strong goal, and his determination to achieve it. It is certainly an inspiration to many.

To be an MBBS graduate, needs a lot of effort and it is dream for many to complete MBBS degree. And to get the fellowship from the most prestigious Hardward Medical School, is a very distant dream and ONLY a dream for many. And once getting it, to forego the Harvard Research Scholarship to achieve his life goal tells volumes about the incomparable determination’ and the ‘courage’ of Karthik. It is TRULY admirable. Hats Off to Karthik.

Adapa Karthik, 27-year-old IPS probationer from Khammam district, has topped the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission this year by sheer dint of hard work.

Mr. Karthik, son of an employee of a rural bank, is an MBBS graduate from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha. He opted for Civil Services in the hope that it would give him ample scope to “contribute for development at the grassroots level”.

Mr. Karthik got selected twice for the Indian Police Service (166 rank in 2004 and 148 in 2006) and is already undergoing training at the SVP National Police Academy in Hyderabad. Karthik was very determined to make it to the IAS list, even though he was selected into the IPS twice.

Karthik’s mentor, P S Ravindran, who heads the popular Delhi coaching institute Vajiram and Ravi, described him as a “highly spirited service-oriented boy committed to serving the people”.

“Unlike most, he never opted for his home cadre while applying to UPSC. He also did not opt for any other service besides IAS, IPS and IFS. He looks at civil services less as a career option, more as real service,” Ravindran said.

Karthik, who can now join the IAS, is already serving in the IPS as he had cleared the 2006 exams. But this is a decision which may not be easy for him to take because he has taken a strong liking to the police job. Karthik had won a scholarship to Harvard Medical School after finishing his MBBS but the “socially committed” youth decided to stay back in India and join the civil services.

Jubiliant Karthik said that he was an average student at school and college and it was only through hard work that he could have achieved this. He gives credit to his success to the support given by his brother-in-law Srihari. He downplays his achievement.

“I am still thinking whether to opt for the Indian Administrative Service or continue with my training at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad. Honestly, I am a little indifferent to the result. The civil service is such an exam where there is not much difference between the person who has topped and the one who has secured the 200th rank.”

“It is an academic achievement. My real accomplishment would be when I am able to sustain my hard work and even 30 years later my work is recognised,” said the 27-year-old achiever, who wants to interact with students and motivate them to work for rural development of the country.

Let’s wish Karthik all the best and hope he achieves many more in his line of duty.
