1-hr Wait To Reach Shamshabad Airport

Many air passengers travelling to the Shamsbahad airport in the evenings are getting stuck at the Uppuguda and Kandikal railway gates for more than an hour. The inordinate delay in constructing road overbridges at the railway gates is causing the problem.
Traffic jams have become a perennial feature near the railway gates during evenings, when express trains, and suburban and MMTS trains pass along these lines.
Mr M. Razzack, who had to catch a Mumbai flight, was stuck at Uppuguda railway crossing on Monday evening.
“Around 6.30 pm, the gates were closed and our taxi was seven or eight vehicles behind,” said his brother, Mr M. Khaleel.
“The gate was opened at 7.30 pm but it took till 8pm for our vehicle to steer clear of vehicles. In the end, he missed his flight,” Mr Khaleel added.
The road links up with the inner ring road at Chandrayangutta and the Srisailam highway road, both of which lead to the airport.
Despite funds being released and the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, laying the foundation stone, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has failed to start construction of the road over bridges.
Residents of Uppuguda, Hari Bowli, Sultan Shahi, Lal Darwaza, Kandikalgate, Krishna Reddy Nagar and Naseem Bagh use this road.
Nowadays, residents of other parts of Old City also take the railway crossing road as traffic on the Charminar-Falaknuma road, which connects the inner ring road, always moves at snail’s pace.
“When the ROBs were sanctioned, we thought the traffic jams would end soon,” said Mr M.A.
Khaled, Mr Shankar Narayana and Mr Kishan Rao, all members of Kandikal Gate Residents Welfare Association. “But nothing has happened.” Mr G. Pandu, the gatekeeper of the railway crossing, said that five express trains and half a dozen suburban and MMTS trains from both directions passed through the line between 6.45 pm and 8.30 pm.
“I too feel bad looking at long row of vehicles waiting for the gate to be opened,” he said. “But I can do nothing.” The GHMC Engineer-inChief, Mr Panduranga Rao, said that tenders were invited twice for the road over bridge project but there was no response from contractors because of increase in steel and cement prices.
He added that the GHMC had appointed consultants to study the traffic flow at the railway gates since movement of vehicles had increased after the inauguration of the airport.
“We will come up with new designs with wider carriageway,” said Mr Rao. “We hope to start works at the earliest.”
