Garbage Bins To Be History Soon
Posted by Pradeep Sadanapalli | May 1, 2008 | 515 views
Heaps of garbage dumped carelessly near the garbage bins in the city’s nook and corner that stinks and is an eyesore and will soon be a thing of the past if the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is to be believed as it is planning to make the city a garbage bin free zone.
Transforming the city into a better place to live in and take it on a par with the foreign countries, a solid waste management plant will be set up in the city. Under this, garbage bins will disappear as garbage will be collected door-to-door and taken directly to the processing unit in vehicles by a private agency where the area will be distributed into various circles.
As of now, the city does not have a processing system, and the entire garbage is dumped from various corners of the city through dumper bins in the dumping yard at Jawaharnagar.
Once the plant comes up, garbage will be filtered and the material which can be processed like paper, glass, etc will be transported to the processing plant and later to the factories. Only decomposed matter will be dumped in the dumping yard.
Officials from the GHMC visited southern California recently and examined the system being carried out by one Burteck Company. While the modalities are yet to be worked out, the officials say that a global tender will be floated shortly and after negotiations, things will be in place.
While in the city, residents pay Rs 10-20 monthly for the cycle rickshaws which collect the garbage from the houses, according to the findings of the corporation officials, abroad people pay around $ 30 per house per month.
As of now, the GHMC has 600 rickshaws each covering 200 houses and the corporation spends Rs 250 per tonne of garbage for its transportation to the dumping yard. Incidentally, the city produces a whopping 3,460 metric tonnes of garbage daily.
“As per the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules 2000, we have an obligation. Right now, collection, transportation and disposal is being carried out and land fill disposal has not been taken up, which needs money and technology,” additional commissioner (health and sanitation) R Rama Mohan Rao said.
While a proposal to carry out scientific land fill was proposed earlier at one location, the government wanted it in four locations. Now, a fresh tender needs to be floated, Rao added.
