The biggest facility in tier-two cities is likely to be ready for inauguration by September
IT’s happening: Workers giving finishing touches to the gigantic roof at the new terminal building of Visakhapatnam airport.
The Rs.95-crore new terminal building in the Visakhapatnam airport is likely to be ready for inauguration by September as civil works will be completed by July and thereafter other infrastructure works will be taken up by the Airport Authority of India (AAI). When completed, this will be the biggest terminal in any of the airports in the tier-two cities of India.
Eco-friendly
The 20,000 sq.m. terminal coming up on a 180-metre by 90-metre site would be really an eco-friendly one as the usage of wood is avoided and instead aluminium glaze imported from Australia and glass are used for roof and other areas, said AAI GM (Engineering Project) H.S. Suresh.
Talking to The Hindu, he said the fully air-conditioned terminal could handle two Airbus A300, two Boeing 747 and two Airbus A320 flights at a time. There would be two aerobridges, one for departure and another for arrival, three escalators and five elevators and as many as 400 domestic passengers and 300 international passengers could move freely in the building at any given time. While the present terminal handles some five lakh passengers a year, the new terminal is designed to handle a minimum of three million passengers per year, he said.
Even as the civil work is in full swing, a look at the state-of-the-art facilities being installed would make one wonder whether they are in some foreign country as they are being done as per international standards.
While the aerobridges, each costing Rs.1.70 crores, are imported from Indonesia, the claddings (for walls) are imported from Germany, chillers from Malaysia, false ceiling material from the U.K., roof material from Australia and escalators from China.
The two-storeyed terminal will also have duty-free shops, online baggage conveyor system, provision for customs and immigration facilities, 20 check-in counters for different airlines, snack bar, restaurant and lounges for VIPs, commercially important persons (CIPs) and business lounges for individual airlines.
Ample parking
Parking would not be a problem at all in the terminal as the parking lot could accommodate 600 cars at a time besides there is provision for separate lot for two/three wheelers, buses and other heavy vehicles and a premium parking area.
The entire terminal would be surrounded by a splendid landscaping on 80,000 sq.m. to be done by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA). Flight information display, CCTV, car calling equipment and automatic intelligent fire alarm and detection system are some of the other facilities to be put up there, which would enable Vizagites to fly to international destinations directly, mostly by the end of this year.
