Traffic Menace

Good news for Hyderabadis who keep cribbing about the traffic scenario. Traffic signals in the city are in for a total makeover.

Besides relocating the signals, certain bus stops and shelters will also be shifted to facilitate the movement of traffic. A review commission has been set up to check the functioning signals in the city and a whole new orientation is being done, informs additional commissioner of police (Traffic), V.S.K. Kaumudi.

“Many signals are too close to flyovers and near intersections or junctions. This blocks the roads and causes traffic jams. So we are going to shift them to some convenient point where traffic flow won’t be disrupted. Also, we keep getting complaints from the public that buses are adding to traffic chaos by stopping in the middle of the road and blocking other vehicles. Bus stops in jam-prone areas such as Kukatpally, Dilsukhnagar and Ameerpet will be shifted. We have already relocated three bus shelters from Pullareddy Monappa, and JNTU-Masab Tank. We have also requested the RTC to shift the buses from turnings and flyover ramps,” says Mr Kaumudi.

What else is on the anvil? The traffic commissioner says, “We are coming up with bus bays. If buses stop in the bays, they won’t block the road. Buses can also take a circular turn and enter the bus stand instead of stopping on the road for passengers to get down. We will also provide more bus shelters and make arrangements for proper illumination. The last will be done keeping in view the requests from women who say they are forced to avoid dark bus shelters and stand on roads for their safety.” For all the new plans that the traffic department is coming up with, Mr Kaumudi thanks the public for their suggestions. “People are very much involved and even send us route-maps for where to shift a bus stand or signal to ease traffic jams.

“Mr Kaumudi informs that even though they have started inspection and location of “problem areas,” most of the work of demolition and re-location will be carried out from August, when the metro rail work will commence in full swing. “We have decided to work closely with the metro rail project personnel to prevent any unwanted demolition and shifting,” he says.

Traffic department authorities hope to find a solution to the chaotic traffic situation in the city by implementing the abovementioned plans. However, public should also behave sensibly and not jump signals, or stand in the middle of the road trying to stop buses, adds Mr Kaumudi.
