Metro Rail Faces Hurdles

The Rs 9,696-crore metro rail project may have cleared the first major hurdle with in-principle clearance from the Centre, but several minor hitches have cropped up over setting up railway stations along the three corridors.
As many as 640 private properties, spread over 43 acres, are likely to get affected due to the metro rail project. Also, 200 government structures are also likely to make way for the mega project. Nearly 27 departments have to part with land for providing space for stations and parking facilities.
Sources said most structures likely to get affected are in Sultan Bazar, Musheerabad, Chikkadpally and Jambagh area, where the road width is not even 50 feet (ft).
With narrow roads at some places, especially on the JBS-Falaknuma corridor, the Hyderabad Metrol Rail Limited (HMRL) has decided to shrink the size of the proposed metro railway stations. It has classified metro stations into three categories—100 ft, 140 ft and above 140 ft. In narrow roads like Sultan Bazar and Chikkadpally, the railway station would be only 100 ft.
In the Old City, where the JBS-Falaknuma corridor would criss-cross, Metro Rail project officials are worried over land acquisition. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has widened some roads, but there are sharp curves on them as a result land acquisition would become essential.
Interestingly, both state and central government departments are reluctant to part with their land. Though HMR had written to these departments a few months ago only 10 departments have responded and only four departments handed over their land.
Some institutions like Osmania University said though they were willing to hand over land near State Archives, the land is in legal wrangles. Some departments like revenue and Huda have handed over their land at Ameerpet, Mental Hospital, revenue department land at Falaknuma, Chalees Makan opposite Sarathi Studios, NTR Park next to Secretariat, State Archives department, GHMC open land opposite Gurudwara in Secunderabad for the project.
The HMR has to give over 300 acres to the Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) party for taking up the metro rail project. This includes 104 acres for Miyapur depot and terminal station, 100 acres for Nagole depot and terminal station and 21 acres for Falaknuma station and 44 acres for parking and circulation area. Apart from this, it has to acquire 43 acres from private owners, especially for setting up railway stations and railway line. “The HMR is trying to avoid taking over private properties except for railway stations. Ninety per cent of the land is being taken from government agencies,” HMR managing director N V S Reddy told ‘TOI’.
