The South Central Railway (SCR) will not get the old Gandhi Hospital site for extending and developing a world class railway station in Secunderabad.

Responding to a query at a press conference here on Thursday, SCR General Manager H.K. Padhee said that the government had already earmarked the piece of land for “some other purpose”.

Therefore, the railways would take up the development of Secunderabad station in the existing place itself.

The project was estimated to cost anywhere between Rs. 3,000 crore and Rs. 5,000 crore. The SCR had urged the government to allot another piece of land near the HITEC city for the development of a fourth rail terminal and this request was under consideration, he said.

With regard to the MMTS trains, Mr. Padhee said that two new services were introduced on February 1 this year taking the total number of services to 89. The number of coaches in 20 trains was increased from six to nine during peak hours to meet the rising demand.

The patronage too went up from 57,500 a day in 2006-07 to 93,000 a day in the last financial year.

Compensation

The General Manager also said that the discussions were on with the GHMC to resolve the issue of land compensation for widening of the Sangeet Theatre junction-Tarnaka stretch. “The Railways should normally get the market value or an alternative land in lieu of the acquired land. However, the very ownership of the land is being disputed by GHMC,” he said.
