The Ranga Reddy district administration has completed acquisition of land to construct a 6.2-km road link the Srisailam state highway to the Shamshabad airport. The so-called P-7 road, however, is unlikely to be ready in time for the March 14 inauguration of the airport, according to district officials. The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda) is expected to complete the road only by the end of April.

Land for the road could be acquired only after two cases were cleared by courts recently. In all 54 acres of land have been acquired for the road. With less than 10 days to go for the inauguration of the airport, different agencies are working overtime to ensure “smooth connectivity” to Shamshabad. “Otherwise it will be a loss of face,” a senior official said.

The six-lane road beneath the P.V. Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway will be ready before the airport inauguration, official sources said. The relatively slow pace of work on the inner ring road between Tarnaka and Aramgarh junction has become a cause for concern. Though GMR, the airport developer, has stepped in to support the government agencies, the road is not fully ready.

Barring a 5-km stretch that cuts through defence establishments and central institutions, the remaining portions of the IRR are expected to be ready by March 16. The government is awaiting clearance from the defence authorities to take up work on this stretch. “Clearance is likely to come by Monday,” an official in the Chief Minister’s Office told this correspondent.

The Panjagutta-Aramgarh stretch is being made a no-parking zone and encroachments are being removed. A one-way road has been laid from Indra Reddy statue T-junction to NH-7 beyond Aramgarh junction. The road will cut through the agriculture university and provide direct access to the NH-7. Another slip road from the NH-7 bypassing the Aramgarh junction has also been developed.
