Widening works of the 56-kilometre-long Inner Ring Road (IRR) that is crucial in providing connectivity from within the city to the international airport at Shamshabad is unlikely to be completed before the targeted date. Over 250 properties still stand in the way of the IRR widening. Negotiations and legal battles besides land acquisition process may make it impossible to finish the works before the airport is inaugurated on March 16.
The IRR is being widened by up to 150 feet not only to ease traffic congestion and provide way to one of the corridors of the Hyderabad Metro Rail but also to ensure that traffic from the city makes it easy to Shamshabad airport. Racing against time, officials are now inviting property owners for an out of court settlement. The corporation and the roads and buildings departments are jointly willing to pay for the land required for road widening. “It’s not that the corporation cannot acquire 250 properties but it will take a longer time for the cases to be settled,” an official said.
However, GHMC additional commissioner (planning), Mr K. Dhanunjaya Reddy, exuded confidence of taking over the required properties before March 16 through negotiations. Subsequently, the road and building department will start laying the road on widened portion.
