Tenders for the construction of 49,000 houses under JNNURM will be called by the month-end and the houses will be completed by October. Some 61 locations are being identified for the purpose mostly in Ranga Reddy district as there is no land in the city, said district incharge minister, Mohd Ali Shabbir.

Chairing the District Review Committee (DRC) meeting here on Monday, he agreed that housing programme was not progressing on expected lines. He said the GHMC would construct 20,000 houses in the first phase under the Intinta Indiramma programme. Of this 12,000 houses woould be for objectionable encroachments like nalas and the remaining for thatched houses. A total of 3.50 lakh applications had been received. The Chief Minister wanted these houses to be taken up first pending third party verification of the remaining applications. Several legislators objected to shifting of slum-dwellers to distant places in the name of rehabilitation. “There is a symbiotic relationship between the slum dwellers and the society and this can’t be ignored,” said Sanathnagar MLA M. Shashidhar Reddy.

He expressed concern that houses under the Rajiv Gruhakalpa scheme were hanging fire for the last three years. This was no way of treating a programme started in the name of Rajiv Gandhi which the UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, launched. He suggested construction of weaker section housing colony on the Begumpet Airport land after the airport was shifted to Shamshabad. Under no circumstances this prime land should be given for commercial purpose. TRS MLA, N. Narsimha Reddy, also supported the demand.

Mr. Shabbir said he could not give any assurance as the land belonged to the Airports Authority. However, the government had no plans to allot the land to multinational companies, he said. GHMC Commissioner C.V.S.K. Sarma said the ROB at Seetaphalmandi would be completed by May-end. He said revised sanction was given for pending community halls and they would be completed by June-end. Works costing Rs. 187 crore were sanctioned in slums. In other places works costing Rs. 836 crore were sanctioned of which 205 were in progress. Road widening works were going on briskly in the old city and 633 properties acquired.

K. Jawahar Reddy, Managing Director, HMWSSB, said the Phase II of Krishna water project would be inaugurated in February. To a question he said the Board was ready for both phase III and Godavari water. It was for the government to decide. Majlis MP Asaduddin Owaisi suggested that all MLAs and MPs should meet the Chief Minister to press for Phase III of Krishna water.
