BioAsia 2008 To Take Off From Feb 7

The 5th edition of BioAsia 2008, the global business forum for promoting biotechnology - will be held at Madhapur in Hyderabad from February 7 to 9. Vice-President M Hamid Ansari will inaugurate the Bio Asia-2008 meet at the International Convention Center.
Major industries minister J Geetha Reddy told reporters here on Wednesday that the Vice-President would lay foundation stones for the National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research (NARFBR) and Centre for Stem Cell Sciences (CSCS) on the occasion. He would also inaugurate the Biotechnology Incubation Centre, which has been jointly set up by the State government and the Centre.
Over 20 internationally renowned scientists will address key issues and developments in the biotechnology field. Two nobel laureates - Martin J Evan and Barry J Marshall - would also take part in the conference and address it. Evan would be conferred with this year’s Genome Valley Excellence Award.
The minister said that APIDC Venture Capital was launching a Rs 200-crore new fund to invest in new ventures. Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park has also agreed to set up a Rs 50-crore fund to encourage the biotechnology companies.
Geetha Reddy: “The animal resource facility will come up at an investment of Rs 500 crore. The state government and Centre for Liver Research and Diagnostics are also setting up Centre for Stem Cell Sciencies at an investment of Rs 150 crore. The biotech incubation centre has been set up at Rs 30-crore investment.”
Geetha Reddy informed that the state biotechnology sector had so far attracted Rs 320 cr investments, and Rs 1,730-cr more investments were in the pipeline.
