Though already delayed for over four months, the Rs.95 crore new terminal building in the Visakhapatnam airport, controlled by the navy’s INS Dega, is likely to be inaugurated by June as major work has already been completed.

Once it is through Vizag will set a record to have the biggest terminal in any of the airports in the district headquarters of India.

By March this year, most of the civil works would be completed and thereafter the Airport Authority of India (AAI) would take up other infrastructural works like fitting of three aerobridges, four escalators, four elevators, customs and immigration counters, interior decoration works of arrival and departure lounges etc.

AAI GM (Projects) H.S. Suresh said over 60 per cent of the work had already been completed and the two-storied new terminal building, which could accommodate 700 passengers per hour and have a parking space for 600 cars, would be ready for inauguration by middle of this year.

Delay

Chairman of Infra Projects Private Limited which is taking up the civil works for the project, M. Venkata Rao, said that but for the delay due to administrative reasons and floods during September-October last year, the project would have been completed by now.

“Anyway, we will be completing our civil works by March and thereafter the joint works to be carried out in association with other contractors of AAI for fitting of escalators, aerobridges, air-conditioning equipment, conveyor belts etc. would be carried out,” he said.

The new building, with more than 2 lakh sq.metres of build up area, will also have a visitors gallery, digital information systems, cyber cafe, conference room, security hold area, modern security gadgets, 16 booking counters for various airlines companies, duty-free outlets and tourist information counters. It could handle over 200 domestic departures and arrivals at a time and over 150 international arrivals and departures simultaneously.

Air Travellers Association (India) president D. Varada Reddy said the new terminal should be inaugurated at the earliest with the facilities for customs and immigration as more international airlines companies have shown interest to bring the city of destiny on international network, particularly to the US and South-East Asia.
