GHMC Targets Infrastructure Developments In The Suburbs

The Greater Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (GHMC) is planning to have a detailed map of the twin cities to unearth infrastructure gaps for taking up necessary works.
It could come in handy for the civic body since it has to provide and maintain infrastructure for a huge expanse of area. Also, because it is slated to spend an unprecedented Rs.800 crore for various works in the current financial year alone.
In sharp contrast, maintenance works costing Rs.175 - Rs.225 crore had been taken up in the entire GHMC in the last three years. “Never before had we taken up such a large extent of works. We are confident of doing qualitative work,” insists Additional Commissioner (Works) M. Rajeshwara Rao.
For the year, an amount of Rs. 945 crore is to be spent on maintenance works like carpeting, cement roads, stormwater drains, community halls, internal roads, etc., of which works had been completed to an extent of Rs. 326 crore or about 35 per cent.
Mr. Rao is, however, unperturbed by the enormity of the task or the fact that he will be working with just 177 engineers. Besides, the proposal to have bigger tender packages to ensure better monitoring and faster work has had mixed results. With Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma emphasising on improving civic amenities in slums, a vast majority of works are being taken up there. Among the significant works is protection of vacant lands in suburbs by building compound walls. Work on walls for 600 of the 1,500-odd grounds is in progress.
In suburbs
Focus is also on providing civic infrastructure in the suburbs. “The core capital area has basic amenities in place to a large extent and hence needs proper maintenance but there is much to be done in the suburbs to bring it on a par,” he points out. If for core area (ex-MCH), the allocation is Rs.331 crore, it is nearly double for suburbs with increased allocations: L.B.Nagar (Rs.134 crore), Kukatpally (Rs.86.43 crore), Uppal (Rs. 59.73 crore), Malkajgiri (Rs.59.13 crore), Kapra (Rs. 57.75 crore), Qutbullapur (Rs.56.65 crore), Rajenderanagar (Rs.34.09 crore), Serilingampally 1&2 (Rs.42.21/Rs.40.44 crore), Alwal (Rs.34.34 crore) and
Patancheru-Ramachandrapuram (Rs.8.3 crore). To put things in better perspective, consider that each suburb has works allocation between Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 20 crore annually!
