Several farmers who had to give up land for the Emaar-built golf course-cum-integrated township on Wednesday demanded that the government return their land. A delegation of farmers and plot owners who lost their land to the project met the minister for major industries, Ms J. Geetha Reddy, at the Secretariat and presented their case.

The government fixed a meagre compensation of Rs 5 lakh per acre, though the company sold each plot of 1,000 sq. yds for more than Rs 2 crore, the farmers alleged. The minister initially tried to argue that it was the TD government which acquired the land. The farmers, however, reminded her about revision of the acquisition notification in 2005 and deposit of compensation amount in court that allowed the acquisition process to go ahead without the consent of the owners. Of the total land given to Emaar, 60 acres belonged to farmers. Another 25 acres of land was converted into residential plots.

The company is ignoring status quo orders from the court and going ahead with the construction, said Mr P.N.V. Prasad, a former Telugu Desam leader, and Mr Rajasekhar, who recently formed a committee with the ousted farmers and plot owners to protest against the land acquisition.
