Rubber dam across Musi

Two rubber dams, one near the High Court and the other opposite Salar Jung Museum, will be erected across the Musi to impound fresh water all along the year. The proposed plan includes 20 m wide pathways on both sides of the river bed where one can have a stroll, playground for children and a suspension bridge for the pedestrians.
This is part of the plans to create a recreation zone in the 4 km stretch between the Muslim Jung bridge and Nayapul under beautification of the Musi programme sponsored by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
Official sources said the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would take up rubber dam project in the engineering procurement construction mode for which the tenders would be called next week. A detailed project report had already been prepared, sources said adding that each dam with 1.5 m height would cost Rs 2.5 crore. Though the corporation initially planned check-dams, the Central Water Commission opposed permanent structures. With the experience of visiting rubber dams in other countries, the GHMC commissioner and former irrigation principal secretary, Mr C.V.S.K. Sarma, opted for rubber dam technology. “Rubber dams are preferred because they can be immediately deflated in the event of floods,” said Mr Sarma.
With the sewerage treatment plant near City Central Library nearing completion, the GHMC will launch its project in a few days. Two pipelines will be erected along the Musi to collect sewear entering into city. “We hope that our project will give a value addition to visitors of the most popular Salar Jung Museum,” a senior official said adding that the deadline for project completion is April 2008.
