Efforts on to complete work on 4-lane stretch by March-end
HUDA and Outer Ring Road authorities are literally racing against time to provide connectivity to the International Airport at Shamshabad to be inaugurated on March 16.
With Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy expressing impatience over the delay in ORR phase I work and personally inspecting parts of the stretch on Tuesday, the ORR project officials are working to ensure that basic four-lane connectivity from Gachibowli to Shamshabad is in place by March-end at least, a lag by about two weeks after the airport inauguration. “Though the work is slightly behind the schedule, work cannot be expedited compromising on quality,” officials said.
The 24 km phase I work was entrusted to two international agencies — a Russian firm Transstroy and a Taiwanese firm Continental Engineering Corporation.
Acquisition delays
The project was hit by land acquisition delays with APPA and Forest Department authorities taking their own time to hand over the land.
Besides, rock cutting in the stretch strewn with hillocks proved to be a time consuming affair. Of 55 structures to come up in the stretch, like underpasses, flyovers, bridges, 50 are under various stages of completion. However, seven major structures near APPA, Musi, Shamshabad, Gachibowli would not be ready till June. Yet this would not affect basic connectivity as rams and diversions would be given till these structures are ready, says ORR Project Director Piyush Kumar.
