Huda fights to control parks

The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are fighting for control of city parks. Huda officials are vehemently opposing the GHMC’s move to control Lumbini Park, NTR Gardens and Saroornagar Park.
Huda had recently developed the 99-acre Saroornagar Park by spending Rs 1.5 crore. The Budha Purnima Project Authority of Huda has been maintaining key recreational areas like Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens which stand on Huda land. Apart from these, Huda is eyeing the Dr G.S. Melkote Park at Narayanaguda which was developed recently and inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on Thursday.
But the GHMC argues that it has better infrastructure and manpower to maintain the parks to international standards. Local public representatives prefer GHMC control over the parks in their localities as it is easier to access corporation officials than those of Huda. Huda says it has been able to maintain the parks in a professional manner. “We have expertise and manpower in maintaining recreational areas. We will not allow others to maintain them,” said an official of Huda. The GHMC has been opposing Huda’s efforts at taking up development works within the core city. A few years ago, Huda constructed flyovers at Begumpet, Tarnaka, Secretariat. After a bitter fight, the government handed over the construction of flyovers at Punjagutta, Greenlands and Nalgonda crossroads to the corporation.
