Illegal structures on rise

More than 700 illegal constructions have come up around the city since 2002 and over 300 are under construction. The real-estate boom in the last few years and the rapid expansion of the city have led to the burgeoning of illegal structures, while unscrupulous builders have made a killing by cashing in on the heavy demand, gullible buyers might ultimately end up paying a heavy penalty for purchasing unauthorised buildings.
Spurred on by the High Court, the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda) has now asked the builders to secure approvals for the structures by the end of the month. “We will regularise the buildings if they are in conformity with the rules,” said Huda vice-chairman, Mr Jayesh Ranjan. “Otherwise we will take action.” The elected ward members in many of the panchayats surrounding the city were themselves involved the illegal constructions. In all, 188 illegal structures have appeared in Shamshabad, where the new airport is being constructed, and 154 have come up in Nizampet.
Pragatinagar (Qutbullapur) has 68 illegal buildings, Bachupally 45, Peerzadiguda 35, Boduppal 26, and Medchal 27. In Pragatinagar 45 illegal structures are under construction while 33 buildings are coming up in Nizampet, 22 in Peerzadiguda and 15 in Boduppal. Builders are playing for high stakes since an apartment costs over Rs 35 lakh in areas such as Nizampet. Huda and Hyderabad Airport Development Authority (for Shamshabad region) turned a blind eye to the spurt of illegal structures till the HC intervened.
