HCU Plans MD Courses In 2 Years; Plans To Construct A Hospital In Campus

Medical students will soon be able to pursue a post-graduate programme in the University of Hyderabad.
The university plans to start an MD programme for medical students as part of the proposal under the XI five-year plan. These courses will be offered after two years.
Since it is mandatory for the university to have a hospital to offer the post graduate programmes, a hospital will be set up within two years on the campus. It will be run by the university and not by any corporate or government hospital. “No existing hospital will construct its wing in the university. But we might have a tieup with some of the hospitals during the initial stages of the hospital administration,” University of Hyderabad vice-chancellor Seyed E Hasnain told ‘TOI’.
The university will seek the Medical Council of India (MCI) nod to run the hospital. The plan for the hospital will be based on the requirements to run the MD programmes.
The varsity has solidified its proposal to start two new schools. While one will be the school of medical sciences, the other will be the school of engineering. These have been planned under the XI five year plan.
The university has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) for a fund of Rs 127 crore to start the two new schools.
“We are known in the world as a research institution with more than 20 publications from each of the eight existing schools. Hence, even the new schools will focus on specialised research in subjects which are not common,’’ HCU pro vice-chancellor, professor B P Sanjay told ‘TOI’.
The school of medical sciences will facilitate research in 10 subjects, including epidemiology, cellular pathology, medical microbiology, molecular biology in medicine, medical informatics, translational research, neurosciences, immunology, molecular medicine and public health. The school will collaborate with the already existing school of life sciences.
As part of the 10 programmes, the students will have 25 different modules to study.
There will be 13 laboratories in the school which will be spread across 46,000 sq ft of land on the university campus at Gachibowli. The labs will facilitate advanced practical sessions in all the 24 different modules.
Besides the school of medical sciences, the school of engineering will offer M.Tech and Ph.D. It will have six departments, including electrical engineering, chemical engineering, material science and engineering, energy technology, earth and space sciences and technology and also photonics and optical engineering. It will have 72 faculty members and a budget of Rs 105 crore is proposed for it.
