The State Central Library located at Afzalgunj in the city will soon get a makeover as authorities have decided to pump in Rs 2 crore to renovate the heritage structure and restore it to its pristine glory.

The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority’s (Huda) heritage committee has accorded the necessary permission to restore the over 70-year-old structure. Painting, lime plastering, lighting, wiring and similar works would be taken up by the roads and building (R&B) department in collaboration with the state archeology department.

“Till now, only minor repairs were taken up now and then. This renovation will restore the grandeur of the library and give a new look to the structure,” director of libraries Dr D Ravindra Nadham told ‘TOI.’

While the poor lighting system has been its major drawback as most sections are dark even during the day time, the new system would be a boon for regular visitors.

“The lighting was done in the 1930s and after so many years, the wiring has also worn out. Sufficient lights will be put up in all the corners,” A Atchamamba, chief librarian, said.

The library has also taken up computerisation of its collection, but the work is progressing at a slow pace for the past six months. With a collection of over 4.5 lakh tomes, the staff could just punch in details of 2,500 books with the help of eGrandhalaya software. However, in a move to finish the work faster, the library authorities intend to rope in an agency to facilitate quick data entry and have asked the director, libraries, to sanction Rs 12 lakh for the purpose.

Nearly 50,000 books of the library were digitised earlier.
