Internationally renowned mathematics genius Shakuntala Devi is keen to start a Mathematics University - ‘Ganitha Kshetra’ in the city.
With foundation for a Mathematics Centre being laid on the coming Sankranthi Day in her home city of Bangalore, she is keen that ‘Ganitha Kshetra’ also materialises in the twin cities, which she loves as much as Bangalore.
Sharing her plans about her proposal with the media persons here on Friday, Ms. Devi said she came to meet the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and seek five acres of land for the University.
The intent behind setting up the centre is to replace fear for mathematics in the minds of students with love for the subject. After witnessing the positive impact of her workshops on students in changing their outlook towards mathematics, she had resolved to set up a mathematics university to address the general phobia of students towards maths and open to them the wonderful world of numbers.
Centre’s focus
The centre would focus on learning, research and impart knowledge of Vedic mathematics coupled with personality development and mind dynamics and organise mathematical Olympiads, seminars with best mathematicians from around the world besides training teachers in the right way to teach mathematics to ignite students’ interest.
When she approached the Government five years ago for land to set up the university, the then chief minister agreed to sanction land. But before she could submit the project report, the ruling dispensation had changed, she recalled.
“My desire to setup Mathematics University here stems from the love and respect I have for Telugu people. Even as a child I gave performances in schools in various towns of the State,” she said, adding Telugus are also known to give highest priority to education.
The mathematics wizard is also keen to make a film based on her book ‘In the wonderland of Numbers’ and looking for Telugu filmmakers to take the initiative since “Telugus are known for making fine, sensitive films.”
