Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy will lay the foundation stone for the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) in the government hospital premises here on January 4. There was a dispute between three MLAs, two ministers and an MP over the location of the Rims being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore. The other choice was Vizianagaram district.

The Congress government aims to complete and commission the teaching hospital before the next general elections. Revenue minister Dharmana Prasada Rao has asked the party cadre to make the foundation laying ceremony a success to boost the party image in the region. Initially, the works would have been started this month but due to the delay in the demolition works being taken up in the government hospital, the stone-laying ceremony was deferred to next month.

The other reason was that the Chief Minister took time for finalising the location. The government has finalised the tenders with Lanco group of companies which had also completed the design works. The work would be taken up under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh Health Infrastruture and Medical Development Corporation.

The executive engineer office of the Corporation has been recently shifted from its present location at Vizianagaram to Srikakulam. Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao told reporters that the Chief Minister was determined to see that the Institute starts functioning with in one year.

Top officials have sought suggestions from the superintendent of the government hospital as how to conduct the day-to-day business without much interruption when the work begins. The Rims would give a boost to the people of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram mostly depended on the King George Hospital and the corporate hospitals in Visakhapatnam.

Patients in emergency cases from border areas have to travel a distance of 200 km to reach Visakhapatnam. More than 50 per cent of the accident victims of the far flung areas of these two districts die as they could not be taken the hospital in time.

Similarly, people belonging to Palasa and Itachapuam are depending more on Berhampur Medical College Hospital in south Orissa for emergency cases. The Chief Minister would also dedicate the Kalingapatnam Road.
