Bringing Godavari waters to city may be delayed by at least six months as the Detail Project Reports (DPRs) on its feasibility was not yet submitted by the Pune-based Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited (WAPCOS).

Apart from the DPRs, the land acquisition process which has to be initiated by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) did not gain momentum yet.

The WAPCOS, a Government of India undertaking, is expected to submit its DPRs either by this month-end or next month. Later, the Board has to call global tenders and finalise them which would take another three to four months.

As per original schedule, the Board planned to invite tenders by this monthend. In the first phase, 120 million gallons per day (MGD) of water is to be tapped from Yellampally Barrage at Sripadasagar reservoir, which is about 191 km away from the city. The project is expected to cost Rs 3,000 crore.

HMWS&SB officials told ENS that pipelines would be laid through Peddapally, Karimnagar, Mallaram, Siddipet and Kondapaka with Master Balancing Reservoir planned at Shameerpet tank on the outskirts.

The pipes would be joined with the existing distribution system in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. A Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) at Maqdoompuram is also being planned.

The WAPCOS projects the population of Greater Hyderabad and its surrounding areas at 1.71 crore by 2031 and the estimated drinking water requirement for this population would be about 30 TMC apart from the available water resources.

To meet this requirement, WAPCOS has suggested to draw 7.3 TMC of water from Godavari river.

The project was advanced to 2009 by two years in view of the increasing demand and also keeping in view the fact that the five reservoirs - Singur, Krishna, Manjira, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar - may not have enough water levels in the next few years.

For the second phase, (Pranahita to Yellampally to draw 9.10 TMC) and the third phase (Pranahita to Hyderabad via Mid Manair and Yellampally to draw 14.60 TMC), the DPRs would be ready by March 2008. The Board has asked the WAPCOS to complete the DPRs as per schedule.

The proposed Godavari drinking water project to the city envisages 80 TMC water taking into consideration the drinking water needs of the City by the year 2070, officials added.
