It’s an ideal destination for traditional ‘vanabhojanams’

PLEASANT DRIVE: An APTDC boat ferrying picnickers to the Bhavani Island in Vijayawada on Sunday.

The placid water of river Krishna dons a new avatar during ‘Kaarthika Maasam’, alluring picnickers and fun-lovers to the picturesque Bhavani Island, an ideal destination for the traditional ‘Vanabhojanams’.

The island, which is just an eight-minute boat ride from Haritha Berm Park at Bhavanipuram, is equipped with all that a picnic party looks for. Serene surroundings, a lush green carpet of lawns that enhance the beauty of the cottages providing a panoramic view of the riverside and sumptuous food served by the restaurants of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC).

Arrangements

“The APTDC has made elaborate arrangements to cater to the needs of the visitors here. We want women to shun their kitchen role and leave the task of satisfying the taste buds of their family members to us. We have made special arrangements to cater to different tastes of different groups and communities,” said APTDC Divisional Manager K.V. Venkateswara Rao on Sunday.

The day witnessed a heavy crowd at the island resort. With nearly 1,200-odd families thronging the place to indulge in fun and frolic associated with the ongoing ‘Kaarthika Maasam’, the APTDC opened three additional food counters at ‘Dwyaipayani’, which serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, and ‘Pushyami’, which serves dry snacks. A relatively simple nine-item lunch was priced at Rs. 54 a person, while the lavish ‘raajabhojanam’ with 18 items was served for Rs. 360 a person.

Stung by the breathtaking beauty of the place and the romanticism that shrouds the cottages that offer complete privacy on this naturally secluded land, an NRI couple from the city has decided to enter the wedlock here.

“For the first time, the island is being opened for a wedding party,” Mr. Rao said, adding that all the cottages have been booked for the marriage scheduled on December 23. The crowd spilling over would be accommodated in the guesthouse at Haritha Berm Park, located on the other side of the river.

“The couple has chosen one of the four tree-top cottages for their first night and we’re hoping that this will set a new precedent for romantic prospective couples,” an elated Mr. Rao said.

The APTDC officials are busy making additional arrangements for a larger crowd expected in the next couple of weeks. Those who want to book cottages in advance may do so by contacting the unit manager of Bhavani Island on 98489-10517.
