Eighty-five days after a deadly terrorist attack snuffed out several lives on its premises, Gokul Chat was reopened on Saturday here at Kothi.
It was business as usual at the snacks centre, as crowds gathered to relish their favourite food items. From 10 a.m. when it was reopened after performing ‘puja’, customers thronged the eatery. Though the number thinned after 3 p.m., heavy crowds were witnessed from the evening till its closure in the night.
There was absolutely no air of fear over the destruction caused by the explosion of a powerful bomb that ripped through the place on August 25 leaving several people dead. Youngsters and children were seen in good numbers at the eatery.
Security measures
Exuding confidence that Gokul Chat would continue to be a favourite food joint for the people after its reopening, owner Mukund Das said that all possible security measures were put in place. A door-frame metal detector and hand-held metal detector were provided to the four specially trained security guards to check everyone entering the premises.
Four hidden cameras were also installed to record images of all the customers and people entering inside. “We will not be deterred by the terrorist acts and are planning to open another branch at Narayanaguda soon,” he said.
Sultanbazar ACP A. Narayana said permission was given to reopen the food joint after the police were satisfied with the security arrangements. Two policemen would be posted to keep tab on suspicious characters and guide the private security guards for a few days.
Near-simultaneous blasts on August 25 at the Gokul Chat and Lumbini Park on Necklace Road killed 43 persons. After the twin blasts, believed to have been triggered by a terrorist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HuJI), both the places remained closed for several weeks. While Lumbini Park was already thrown open to the public, Gokul Chat was reopened on Saturday.
