The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is implementing a project to provide tourist-friendly facilities at the popular tourist site - Charminar Fort - with an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore.
The plan, developed by London-based consultancy firm EDAA, includes developing a buffer zone around the Fort and creating seating facilities for tourists.
Internet kiosks, restaurants, better sanitation facilities and bus services for tourists will also be introduced as part of the project. A tourist information centre and the ‘Charminar Sound and Light Show’ will add to the Fort’s offerings for tourists. The signage around the Fort will also be redone to match world-class standards, according to Balasubramanyam Reddy, Zonal Commissioner - South Zone, GHMC.
GHMC also wants to revive ‘heritage walks’, which have been suspended since quite some time, to explain the history and significance of the monument to tourists. It plans to organise eight heritage walks, once every month, wherein tourists will be accompanied by trained guides.
Currently, GHMC is constructing a ring road around the Charminar Fort area for smooth diversion of vehicular traffic. Almost 75 per cent of the road has already been constructed. While the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) has provided Rs 35 crore for implementing the project, GHMC has sent a request to the Union government for providing the remaining funds.
