Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel said on Tuesday that the Centre aims at coming up with a grid of airports in the next 10 years across the country so that an airport will be available within 50 km radius from any point in the country.
Speaking at the annual economic editors conference here, Mr Patel stressed the need for involving private sector in building airports and infrastructure.
The Centre is in favour of more and more joint ventures with private sector for infrastructure creation in the sector. A broad policy framework will be put for the Cabinet clearance and it was discussed in the committee on Infrastructure meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr Patel said.
The minister talked about and praised “the change of mindset” on the part of state governments in the last six months. He said that state governments used to think that civil aviation an creat ing infrastructure for the same is purely a job of the Centre. “But now, state governments are increasingly involving themselves in the efforts to improve air conductivity across the country,” he said. Mr Patel asserted that the civil aviation is a sunrise sector and that the sector is expected to post a year-on-year growth rate of 25 per cent in the next 10 years.
While the total fleet including those of private sector airlines in 2004 was 125, it has now reached the mark of 400, he said. Likewise, the number of airports have risen from 50 in 2004 to 80 now and the ministry’s endeavour will be to make it 100 by end 2008.
