Sonia to inaugurate Hyd airport on March 16

Hyderabad’s new international airport would be dedicated to the nation on March 16, 2008, by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

This is for the first time that a greenfield international airport of such dimensions is getting completed exactly in three years of its laying foundation and that too, by the same leader, a press release issued by the chief minister’s office stated.

Chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy is holding a detailed review meeting on progress and connectivity issues regarding the new international airport on Saturday, keeping in view the fast reaching deadlines, as the GMR-led GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, is expected to start trial operations from next month.

The greenfield airport is being developed on 5,495 acres, with a project outlay of Rs 2,478 crore in phase I, with a debt-equity ratio of 2.1:1.

Around 88 per cent of the work has been completed as on October 31, 2007, which is split between different components like passenger terminal building and roofing works at 93 per cent, facade (external envelope) works up to 97 per cent, airside landside works and airfield pavements, as well as runway up to 93 per cent, taxiway 96 per cent and apron around 87 per cent, it said.
