Brace up Hyderabadis for the city’s traffic woes and quality of life is to worsen even before it starts improving!
With no proportional improvement in infrastructure, be it road network, public transport, drainage and water supply in relation to the explosive population growth the twin cities had witnessed from 1970s and 1980s, various projects being undertaken by HUDA, right from Outer Ring Road, flyovers, radial roads, satellite townships, to decongest the core city and pave development in the peripheral areas, will start yielding result only after five years.
Deficiencies
Delivering a talk on ‘HUDA – Achievements and Vision’ at an interactive meeting organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI), HUDA Vice-Chairperson Jayesh Ranjan pointed out that there was a huge backlog of deficiencies to be overcome before significantly improving quality of life for citizens in the coming years.
Despite tremendous economic activity in Hyderabad, quality of life in city was deteriorating under strain of influx of population, congestion of core city, growth of vehicles against stagnant road length of mere six percent, least among all the metros, he said.
Stating that at present Hyderabad was trailing behind five other metros in terms of Gross District Product per capita, basic amenities, road space, for historical reasons and failure of proper planning and management in 1970s and 80s when the population influx started, he said the need of the hour was for collective effort by HUDA, other service agencies, private, corporate sector and civil society to improve quality of life. Government alone could not tackle all the issues without responsible participation and support from other sectors.
He assured that the Rs.6,000 cr Outer Ring Road Project, 32 radial roads planned by HUDA would improve road length to nine per cent by 2010 and facilitate decongestion process through satellite townships along the ORR.
Projects
If the proposed MRTS, BRTS projects became reality, then percentage of public transport users would climb to 69 per cent, easing traffic situation, he said.
He also mentioned about various projects of HUDA for environment upgradation like restoration of lakes, making city inclusive by providing housing for middle and working class through its master and zonal development plans.
